“International Domestic Workers’ Day”

On June 15, 2025, the Labor Rights for All (LRA) program under the MAP Foundation organized “International Domestic Workers’ Day” at the Holiday Garden in Chiang Mai.

Approximately 70 participants attended the event, including members of various networks and domestic workers from Chiang Mai and other provinces.

The event focused on the issues and challenges faced by domestic workers and emphasized the need to include this group under Thailand’s labor protection laws, including access to social security.

To promote the recognition and rights of domestic workers under the Domestic Workers Act, the event concluded with three key recommendations addressed to the government, the Minister of Labor, and the Secretary-General of the Social Security Office:

  1. Request that the government, the Ministry of Labor, and the Social Security Office issue a ministerial regulation to urgently include domestic workers whose employers are not currently enrolled in the social security system.
  2. Request that the government, the Ministry of Labor, and the Social Security Office expedite the amendment of the Compensation Act to protect domestic workers whose employers do not operate formal businesses.
  3. Request that the government, the Ministry of Labor, and the Department of Skill Development establish criteria for vocational training for domestic workers. During the training period, they should receive an allowance at the minimum wage rate, and after completing the training, a certificate should be issued. This certificate can be used to adjust wages according to the level of skill development.

The leader of the Domestic Worker group handed this letter of recommendations to representatives from the Social Security Office during the event.

In addition, the event provided an opportunity for domestic workers to connect, build networks, and share their perspectives.
