Currently, MAP Radio broadcasts 56 hours of live programs in four languages: Shan, Karen, Akha and Thai. MAP Programs cover a wide variety of topics such as migrant rights, occupational health and workplace safety, HIV/AIDS prevention, women’s issues, worker issues, youth issues, general health and various cultural topics and issues.
Why is MAP Radio important?
· Mainstream media in Thailand tend to reproduce negative stereotypes of migrants and ethnic populations, labelling them as uneducated, criminals, victims or spreaders of disease. MAP radio will provide people from migrant and ethnic groups the space to positively represent themselves and help shatter myths often held by the general public. By positively showcasing migrant and ethnic cultures, and bringing attention to their contributions and the challenges they face, MAP Radio will increase understanding amongst the general population.
· Migrant and ethnic communities do not have a space in mainstream media to express themselves, especially in their own language. MAP Radio will be a space where their voices and opinions can be heard, encouraging public participation and civic engagement. Broadcasting will be in numerous migrant languages and Thai.
· Migrant or ethnic communities don’t always have access to up-to-date information regarding their rights or general well-being in Thailand. MAP Radio programs will disseminate accurate information on migrant and labour rights and other issues that aim to improve migrants’ quality of life in Thailand.
· Migrants and ethnic populations can be isolated, both physically and culturally. MAP Radio programs will facilitate communication between various groups of migrants, workers and ethnic communities to foster cooperation, solidarity and encourage collective action to improve their situation.
· MAP Radio will give migrant and ethnic communities, as well as the general public, the opportunity to learn about and participate in radio broadcasting. Training will be provided to community members and give the opportunity for individuals or community-based organizations (CBOs) to host their own programs.
· MAP Radio will facilitate the coordination and exchange of information amongst NGOs, CBOs, and networks, thus enhancing networking and cooperation.
