Under the MAP Foundation’s cross border project, a network meeting with community based organizations was organized by the LRA Team and the Thu Ta Da Na Knowledge Development Social Organization in Tachileik, eastern Shan State, Myanmar on Dec. 7, 2016.
The network meeting’s primary focus was on safe migration, and was attended by 25 individuals from Tachileik Immigration Unit, Shwe Tachi Motorbike Taxi Team, World Vision, Lisu Literature and Culture Organization, Than Lwin Thitsar, Dawna Pungyit, Information Response Unit, ASG, Mawkkon and the Garakha Social Assistance Organization.
The objective of this meeting was to foster cooperation on safe migration issues between government departments and community based organizations in Thailand and in local areas of Myanmar. The objective was also to increase the visibility of NGOs working to assist migrants.
There were presentations on related activities provided by the Township Immigration Unit, MAP Foundation, Mawk Kon Organization and Than Lwin Thitsar.
During the meeting, one of the attendees suggested that the MAP Foundation provide a training to promote knowledge on safe migration.
After the network meeting, MAP Foundation staff and a local organizer sat together to review the meeting. Tsit Khaing Htun from the Thu Ta Da Na Knowledge Development Social Organization said he was pleased by the immigration officer’s clear presentation on the various roles and responsibilities of the immigration office.
He expressed the opinion that the network meeting was the first step towards collaboration between the Thailand based NGO, government departments and community based organizations in Myanmar, to effectively address safe migration issues.
MAP has found that sharing information through network meetings is an easy way to spread core messages to migrants at origin and transit communities, to promote safe migration to Thailand and other destination countries.
