Legal Action

MAP develops paralegals in the migrant community to provide initial counseling and referrals, a crucial component of our capacity building work. In 2016 alone, MAP trained 47 paralegals over the course of two trainings. The curriculum included rights protected under the Labour Protection Act, the steps of filing a complaint and going to court, how to collect documents to support a claim, and the penalties for employers who violate workers’ rights. The paralegals shared this information with other workers in the Mae Sot area, some of whom then negotiated with their employers to increase their daily wage of 150 Thai Baht ($4.41) to 200 THB ($5.88).

MAP’s activities also included direct legal aid – giving legal aid to migrants both individually and in class-action suits. These address issues like unfair dismissal from factories and unpaid wages.
