Stranded in factories or dormitories during the floods, often without their passports and documents in their possession, many migrant workers are now facing hefty fines for overstaying their visas and/or their 90 days  notification.

Burmese migrant workers at the Sang Chareon Hot Dip Galvinize Co Ltd in Pathum Thani told MAP Foundation that they are being fined over 15,000 baht for overstaying because of the floods. The workers visas expired on 28th October 2011 and the Human Resource manager who held their passports could not get to the Immigration office because Pathum Thani was under water . On November 25th, they were told that immigration would charge them 15,000 baht each for the 20 days overstay.  Overstay fees for visa are 500 baht a day with a maximum of 20,000 baht fine.
