Burmese Domestic Workers in Thailand Demand Greater Protection
CHIANG MAI, Thailand — Burmese domestic workers in Thailand, who are not protected by existing domestic legislation and remain highly vulnerable to exploitation, have called on the Thai government to do more to ensure their basic labor rights.

Thailand has the opportunity to extend full labour rights to the invisible workers of society–the cleaners, housekeepers and maids–who are so often locked out of labour protection laws, according to speakers at an International Domestic Workers Day conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

MAY DAY activities at Chiang Mai 2016 – Resurrecting the Labour Movement!
On May 1-2, 2016 at Chiang Mai, MAP Foundation, as part of the Northern Labour Network, which is comprised of 15 organizations, held a workshop with over 150 migrant workers from various occupations. On the first day, the workshop was opened by a performance by migrants, organized by Gab Fai Community Theatre. The performance, without dialogue, illustrated migrants’ problems, ranging from unfair treatment at work, improper wages and lack of social protections.

Recommendations for International Migrants Day 2015
Every December 18 we celebrate International Migrants' Day. It is on this day 1990 that UN adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights into account human rights principles to set out rights protections for migrant workers and their families in all countries.Thailand is one of a number of countries which receives many migrant workers and relies on them as an essential component in the development of the economy.
